CAT is the heavyweight. It's your gateway to IIMs and top B-schools like FMS Delhi, SPJIMR Mumbai. MAT gives you four attempts yearly – great if you want multiple chances. CMAT sits between them: easier than CAT, opens doors to 1,300+ colleges.

How Long Should You Prepare

One of the biggest mistakes beginners make is underestimating preparation time.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Ignoring syllabus – download official syllabus first

  2. Not taking mock tests – essential for exam readiness

  3. Poor time management – always use timers

  4. Overlooking revision – create summary notes

  5. Neglecting GK – it's 20-25% of MAT/CMAT

The Bottom Line

IIM aspirants can prepare for CAT with a commitment of one year, while students looking for the flexibility of multiple attempts and moderate levels of difficulty will benefit from preparing for MAT. If you are an applicant to AICTE approved institutions with levels of difficulty appropriate on the less rigorous side, CMAT could be the best option for you.

Start early, and create a plan you can follow, take your mock exams seriously, analyse the results thoroughly and revise often.

Mulshi Group of Institutes offers 3, 6, and 12 month courses in preparation for CAT, MAT and CMAT, as well as access to expert instructors, 20+ mock tests and personalised counselling. We have historically had 100% placement rates amongst our students and students average annual CTC is 8.5 Lakhs per annum.
